Many of my female clients report that they have a lot of trouble saying no to the many demands in their lives: their bosses, their partners, their children, their friends…. the list goes on. We’ve become so accustomed to always being on the go and overbooking our schedules, that we’ve forgotten how to take care of ourselves.

What’s your favorite thing to do for yourself?

Some of mine include:
  • Waking up 30 minutes early (and I’m not a morning person) to read quietly in bed before the hustle and bustle of the day
  • Making time to watch no brainer TV shows like Gossip Girl and Grey’s Anatomy
  • Cooking myself a proper dinner at least twice a week
Yes, these are all small things — but I actively make time for them and, thus, for myself. So all these little things add up to some big things: I’m more relaxed and feel like I have adequate space in my life. Of course, none of this would be possible if I said YES to every invitation or request that came my way — on the contrary, I’ve gotten very good at saying no when I know I need downtime.
As we head into the fall, consider saying no to your usual errands/chores/activities and instead use that time for a mini-break. Even 30 minutes of downtime can leave you relaxed and refreshed.
